Robert Thompson DAVIS, Congress, MA (1823-1906)

DAVIS Robert Thompson , a Representative from Massachusetts; born in County Down, Ireland, August 28, 1823; immigrated to the United States with his parents, who settled in Amesbury, Essex County, Mass., in 1826; attended the Amesbury Academy and the Friends' School in Providence, R.I.; was graduated from the medical department of Harvard University in 1847; dispensary physician in Boston; practiced medicine in Waterville, Maine; moved to Fall River, Mass., in 1850; member of the State constitutional convention in 1853; served in the State senate 1859-1861; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1860, 1876, and 1900; member of the State board of charities when organized in 1863; appointed a member of the State board of health upon its organization in 1869; mayor of Fall River in 1873; elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth, Forty-ninth, and Fiftieth Congresses (March 4, 1883-March 3, 1889); was not a candidate for renomination in 1888; resumed the practice of medicine at Fall River and also engaged in the cotton manufacturing industry; died at Fall River, Mass., October 29, 1906; interment in Oak Grove Cemetery.
