Nathaniel Herbert CLAIBORNE, Congress, VA (1777-1859)

CLAIBORNE Nathaniel Herbert , a Representative from Virginia; born in Chesterfield, Sussex County, Va., November 14, 1777; attended a local academy; engaged in agricultural pursuits; member of the State house of delegates 1810-1812; served in the State senate 1821-1825; an executive councilor; elected as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth through the Twenty-third Congresses, and elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1825-March 3, 1837); chairman, Committee on Elections (Twenty-second through Twenty-fourth Congresses); unsuccessful candidate in 1836 for reelection to the Twenty-fifth Congress; resumed agricultural pursuits; died near Rocky Mount, Franklin County, Va., August 15, 1859; interment in the family cemetery of his Claibrook estate near Rocky Mount, Va.
