John Holmes BURLEIGH, Congress, ME (1822-1877)

BURLEIGH John Holmes , a Representative from Maine; born in South Berwick, York County, Maine, October 9, 1822; attended the local academy; became a sailor when sixteen years of age and commanded a ship on foreign voyages from 1846 until 1853 when he engaged in woolen manufacturing at South Berwick, Maine; also engaged in banking; member of the State house of representatives in 1862, 1864, 1866, and again in 1872; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1864; elected as a Republican to the Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1877); was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1876; resumed his former manufacturing pursuits; died in South Berwick, Maine, December 5, 1877; interment in the Portland Street Cemetery.
