John CONDIT, Congress, NJ (1755-1834)

CONDIT John , a Representative and a Senator from New Jersey; born in Orange, N.J., July 8, 1755; attended the public schools; studied medicine; served as a surgeon in the Revolutionary War; one of the founders and a trustee of the Orange Academy in 1785; member, State general assembly 1788-1789; elected as a Democratic Republican to the Sixth and Seventh Congresses (March 4, 1799-March 3, 1803); appointed as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy in the term beginning March 4, 1803, caused by the failure of the legislature to elect; subsequently elected and served from September 1, 1803, to March 3, 1809; again appointed to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Aaron Kitchell; subsequently elected and served from March 21, 1809, to March 3, 1817; elected to the Sixteenth Congress and served from March 4 to November 4, 1819, when he resigned to accept a Treasury position; appointed assistant collector of the port of New York 1819-1830; died in Orange Township, N.J., May 4, 1834; interment in the Old Graveyard, Orange, Essex County, N.J.
