James SHIELDS, Congress, OH (1762-1831)

SHIELDS James , a Representative from Ohio; born in Banbridge, County Down, Ireland, April 13, 1762; received a good common-school education; entered the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1782 and was graduated in 1786; attended medical college for two years; immigrated to the United States in July 1791 and settled in Frederick County, Va., where he taught school; moved to Butler County, Ohio, in 1801; returned to Virginia and became a citizen of the United States in 1804; returned to Ohio in 1807; member of the State house of representatives 1806-1827; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-first Congress (March 4, 1829-March 3, 1831); was killed through the accidental overturning of a stagecoach near Venice, Butler County, Ohio, August 13, 1831; interment in Venice Cemetery, Venice, Ohio.
