DAVENPORT, John, Congress, CT (1752-1830)

DAVENPORT John , a Representative from Connecticut; born in Stamford, Conn., January 16, 1752; pursued academic studies; was graduated from Yale College in 1770; engaged in teaching there in 1773 and 1774; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1773 and practiced in Stamford, Conn.; member of the State house of representatives 1776-1796; served in the commissary department of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, attaining the rank of major in 1777; elected as a Federalist to the Sixth and to the eight succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1799-March 3, 1817); chairman, Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business (Seventh Congress); declined to be a candidate for reelection in 1816; died in Stamford, Fairfield County, Conn., November 28, 1830; interment in North Field (now Franklin Street) Cemetery.
