Alvan CULLOM, Congress, TN (1797-1877)

CULLOM Alvan , a Representative from Tennessee; born in Monticello, Ky., September 4, 1797; received a liberal schooling; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1823 and commenced practice in Monroe, Overton County, Tenn.; member of the State house of representatives in 1835 and 1836; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth Congresses (March 4, 1843-March 3, 1847); resumed the practice of law; circuit judge of the fourth judicial circuit of Tennessee 1850-1852; member of the peace convention of 1861 held in Washington, D.C., in an effort to devise means to prevent the impending war; died in Livingston, Overton County, Tenn., July 20, 1877; interment in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Livingston.
