two-way back with the N.Y. Giants in the late 1930s and longtime baseball umpire; caught game-winning touchdown in 1938 NFL title game; retired from football in 1946 and briefly coached the Providence Steamrollers of the Basketball Association of America; American League umpire from 1950-75; worked five World Series and was at first base when Don Larsen pitched his perfect game in 1956. The cause of his death was not given.
