French philosopher who originated deconstruction, a controversial and widely influential movement that shaped literary theory and a variety of other disciplines, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s. In writings such as Of Grammatology and Writing and Difference, he argued that all broadly philosophical claims have meaning only in the system of competing and opposing possibilities they wish to transcend.
