Chinese surgeon, was released after 45 days in military custody. He was detained for writing a letter to top members of the government that criticized the deadly crackdown on democracy protesters in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Upon his release, Jiang said, “The next thing I will direct my energies to is the problem of AIDS.” In 2003, Jiang revealed that several hospitals in China had underreported the number SARS patients.
