Obasanjo, a Christian from the Yoruba ethnic group, received 62% of the vote, while opposition leader Muhammadu Buhari, a Muslim from the Hausa-Fulani ethnic group, won 32%. The former military ruler was first elected president of Africa's most populous nation in 1999, becoming the first civilian ruler in 15 years.
