four-star general, became the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, assuming command just weeks after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. A 36-year Air Force veteran, Myers served as commander of the U.S. forces in Japan (1993–1996) and commander of the Pacific Air Forces (1997–1998). He logged more than 600 hours as a fighter pilot in Vietnam.
