U.S.-based Chinese scholars, were convicted in July of spying for Taiwan in a Beijing court and sentenced to 10 years in prison. In a related case, Li Shaomin, a naturalized U.S. citizen who taught at a Hong Kong university, was also convicted of spying. He was deported to the U.S. Gao and Qin were granted medical parole weeks later, just before a visit to Beijing by U.S. secretary of state Colin Powell.
