47th NHL All-Star Game. Date: Jan. 18 at San Jose Arena in San Jose; Coaches: Doug MacLean, Florida (East) and Ken Hitchcock, Dallas (West); MVP: Mark Recchi, Montreal right wing (East) — three goals.

Starters were chosen by fan vote, reserves by a 5–man panel of league GMs. John LeClair was promoted to the Eastern Conference starting lineup in place of injured Pittsburgh RW Jaromir Jagr. Jagr's roster spot was filled by Adam Oates. Scott Lachance was added to the Eastern Conference reserves in place of injured NY Islanders RW Zigmund Palffy.

Tony Granato was promoted to the Western Conference starting lineup in place of injured Colorado C Joe Sakic. Teemu Selanne and Brendan Shanahan were added to the Western Conference in place of injured players Sakic and Colorado C Peter Forsberg. Dmitri Kristich, Keith Tkachuk and Guy Hebert were added to the Western Conference reserves in place of injured Los Angeles D Rob Blake, Dallas C Mike Modano and Detroit goalie Chris Osgood, respectively.

Dale Hawerchuk and Dale Hunter were added to the Eastern Conference lineup and Granato and Slava Fetisov to the Western Conference as special selections by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
