Hearty, large character actor much like his father who first appeared as a teenager in 1933's Wild Boys of the Road. He worked in bit parts throughout the '40s and '50s, twice reprising his father's role as the Dumas character Porthos in At Sword's Point (1951) and Lady in the Iron Mask (1952); Hale, Sr. had played the part in 1939's The Man in the Iron Mask. He is best remembered for his role as Jonas “The Skipper” Grumby in Gilligan's Island (1964–67), but also appeared in Biff Baker, U.S.A. (1952–55), Casey Jones (1957) and The Good Guys (1969). He reprised his Skipper role for cartoon voice-overs for Gilligan's Island (1974–77, 1982–83) and three television movies that reunited the original cast.
