Leonard Bernstein

The first American-born superstar conductor, he was the principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic from 1957 to 1970. He also composed numerous choral and symphonic works but is best remembered for his musicals, including On the Town (1944) and West Side Story (1957), and for his operetta Candide (1956).
