Several Hollywood productions were delayed or indefinitely postponed in the wake of September 11th's terrorist attacks. Glitter was one of the first new films to debut, presumably because of its uplifting rags-to-riches story. Glitter tells a strikingly similar tale to the Ike and Tina Turner film What's Love Got to Do With It?. Both were penned by Kate Lanier. In this one, Mariah Carey plays Billie Frank. She's an ambitious young vocalist abandoned by her alcoholic mother. Along with childhood friends Louise and Roxanne (Da Brat and Tia Texada), Billie struggles to get a break in the mid-1980s Manhattan disco world. Before you can say “Ike and Tina,” she's romantically involved with her manager, dicey Julian Dice (Max Beesley).

There are several scenes where Mariah Carey does what she does best: sings. But for the bulk of the movie she struggles to act, and ends up being upstaged by those around her.
