Sometimes success can be harder than failure. Mark and Michael Polish received acclaim for their eerie and original debut, Twin Falls Idaho. They wrote, directed, and starred in the film about a pair of Siamese twins. It was a startlingly unique journey through oddball Americana. Their sophomore effort, Jackpot, retains the visual power but loses the urgency of the Polish brothers' initial success.

Jon Gries plays Sunny Holiday, a washed-up karaoke singer who is anything but. He abandons his wife (Daryl Hannah) and daughter to join seedy manager Lester (Garrett Morris) on a multi-month karaoke tour with hopes of making it big. The darkly comic edge of Twin Falls Idaho is mishandled here, and Jackpot quickly becomes both predictable and glum. The flagging plot saps rewarding moments to produce a mediocre art-house movie.
