Contemporary filmmakers view suburbia as a kind of non-place where nothing really happens except the bored perversity of its inhabitants. (Think American Beauty or Happiness). Too Much Sleep reverses the equation by placing a normal slacker on an eventful chase through the surrealistic wilds of nowhere, New Jersey. Picture a strip-mall bildungsroman with an offbeat heart.

Security guard Jack Crawford (Marc Palmieri) turns to a lightweight lowlife (Pasquale Gaeta) to recover his purloined gun. Jack brought the piece—inherited from Pops—along with him on the nightly graveyard shift until an attractive young woman swindled it away from him. Metaphors of manhood abound as Jack suffers through one strangely tuned encounter after the other in the slow pursuit of his pistol. The spot-on vignettes build with a steady rhythm. Too Much Sleep's simple synopsis belies a competent movie that should attract greater attention to its writer-director.
