Dungeons and Dragons stumbles squarely into the Battlefield Earth school of filmmaking: movies with a wafer-thin target market of devotees even less likely than the general populace to take the product's awfulness as tongue-in-cheek.

This cinematic fracas is based on the hugely popular role-playing game of the same name. While the gaming version of Dungeons and Dragons requires each player's imagination, the film erases any magic with sloppy special effects and overcooked acting. All the acting is bad, but Jeremy Irons—perpetually cast as the pervert—falls farthest. He huffs and puffs as evil Profion. The bad wizard/politician needs a magic rod to defeat Empress Savina (Thora Birch) and control all the red dragons in this medieval fantasyland.
