While Eddie Murphy may not be as raw as he once was, he's been steadily honing his acting skills since the '80s. Nutty Professor II: The Klumps showcases Murphy's touch for comic characters over and over again, thanks to the help of prosthetics wizardry and his ability to make each persona unique. This time around he plays an entire six-person family.

The Klumps sees rotund son Sherman (Eddie Murphy) return. He's an overweight scientist encountering genetic difficulties that emerge in the form of trim, sexually voracious alter-ego Buddy Love (Eddie Murphy, sans fat suit). This is where the movie succeeds, for Murphy can deliver pathos and empathy even as he plays the amiable workaday Klumps for crude laughs. Things wane when he inhabits Buddy Love. Worse still are disastrous plot divergences involving a giant sodomizing hamster. Squeezed into the sequel's clutter is a romance between Sherman and lab assistant Denise (Janet Jackson), which, in a movie as bawdy as this one, is inexplicably tame. More overburdened with characters than the original, The Klumps repeats the Professor's popular straining success.
