With star power to spare, the soundtrack to the summer's most happening movie has a retro vibe running right through it.

Madonna, R.E.M., Melanie G (also known as Scary Spice) and The Who are among the big names who've contributed to the disc, which is dominated by previously unreleased tracks.

The album's lead single is Madonna's “Beautiful Stranger,” a swirling blend of psychedelia and techno pop - another collaboration with U.K. producer William Orbit, who produced Madonna's multi-million selling Ray of Light.

Several artists deliver vintage cover songs, but the most intriguing is R.E.M.'s dead-on version of Tommy James' “Draggin' the Line” and Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello's splendid “I'll Never Fall in Love Again.” Though Melanie G's take on Cameo's “Word Up” is nothing to write home about, the big disappointment on the set is Big Blue Missile with Scott Weiland's dreadful and off-key run through The Zombies' “Time of the Season.” Those are exceptions though to a set that's absolutely destined to get Austin Powers' mojo working.
