PJs stands for projects, not pajamas. Indeed, The PJs does not make for warm and cozy television. It's a comic, but not pretty, look at life in the Hilton-Jacobs Projects, featuring the building's gruff, indefatigable super, Thurgood Stubbs (voice of Murphy) and the tenants of the building, including his wife (Devine), who practices voodoo, and a crack addict. The characters are made of foam latex (think beefy claymation figures). The show sparked criticism from civic groups and prominent African Americans who said the show is offensive and insensitive to blacks. The PJs is “hateful towards black people” and “shows no love at all for black people,” said filmmaker Spike Lee.
