This biopic of journalist and reformer Dorothy Day (Kelly) ties traumatic events and turning points in her life into a neat package. One has to assume this wasn't the case in Day's life. Entertaining Angels focuses mainly on the mid-1930s, just after she co-founded The Catholic Worker. Day devoted her life to helping the poor and had Communist leanings that irked the Catholic Church. Kelly nicely captures Day's pluckiness, but her political and spiritual ideology take a back seat to depictions of her affairs with philosopher Peter Maurin (Sheen), journalist Lionel Moise (Kestner) and her common-law husband, Forster Batterham (Von Dohlen).
