Caspar Weinberger

public servant who worked under Presidents Nixon, Ford, and Reagan. Highly suspicious of the Soviet Union, Weinberger, as Reagan's secretary of defense, requested—and received—billions for a peacetime buildup of the military and endorsed Reagan's strategic defense initiative. He was indicted in 1992—and later pardoned—for allegedly concealing information in the Iran-contra scandal.
