Dorothy Stang, 2005 News

American-born Roman Catholic nun, was shot and killed in Brazil's Amazon state of Pará in February. A naturalized Brazilian, Stang had been working with Brazil's rural poor since the 1970s, helping them farm and produce forest products and protecting them against illegal loggers who wanted to commandeer their land. The government sent 2,000 troops to Pará after the killing to calm the growing tension and banned logging in a large swath of the state.
