Czeslaw Milosz

Age: 93

Polish essayist and poet who won the 1980 Nobel Prize in Literature. Many of his early poems poignantly recall the horrors of World War II and the Nazi occupation of Poland. His later poems drew on the Communist dictatorship in Poland. In his best-known work, The Captive Mind, Milosz critically analyzed the oppression of intellectuals under Communist totalitarianism.
