executive editor and managing editor, respectively, of the New York Times, resigned in June, five weeks after reporter Jayson Blair stepped down. Blair had admitted to fabricating dozens of stories. Several reporters and editors at the Times publicly criticized Raines's management style and said he had created an unpleasant work environment. They also expressed outrage that Blair had been allowed to continue writing for the paper after several of his editors complained about his sloppiness and high error rate. In July Bill Keller, a New York Times columnist, was selected as executive editor of the paper.
