patriarch of America's first family with three generations of Olympians and was oldest surviving Winter Games gold medallist; won 500- and 1500-meter speed skating events at 1932 Games in his hometown of Lake Placid; son, Jim, competed at 1964 Innsbruck Games and grandson, Jim Jr., won gold in the skeleton at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. He died of injuries sustained in the car crash.
