former Kent and England captain considered one of the most gifted cricket batsmen of his generation; fourth highest scoring England player in test history with 7,264 runs from his 114 tests (international matches); he was also a celebrated fielder and at one time held the English record with 120 test catches; described as a cricket prodigy, and the youngest (13 years old) to play at the Lord's Cricket Ground, the sports most prestigious cricket venue; president of the Marylebone Cricket Club, the sport's ruling body in England, in 1987; chairman of the International Cricket Council 1989-93; knighted in 1992; appointed to the House of Lords in 1997 as Lord Cowdrey of Tonbridge. He died of a heart attack.
