Isaac Stern

Soviet-born concert violinist who was considered one of the world's leading virtuosos of the 20th century. Stern was a prolific performer, touring relentlessly around the world. In 1960 he led a successful drive to save Carnegie Hall from demolition. The building's main concert hall was named in his honor in 1997. He made his debut at age 11 with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and first appeared in New York in 1937. In 1994 Sony Classical released Isaac Stern: A Life in Music, a 44-disc collection of his works.
