Roman Catholic nuns, were convicted in June by a Brussels court of war crimes and genocide for allowing Hutu militia to take and slaughter some 7,000 Tutsis who had sought refuge in their convent in southern Rwanda in 1994. Mukangango was sentenced to 15 years and Mukabutera to 12 years in a Belgian jail. Alphonse Higaniro, a Butare businessman, was also convicted and sentenced to 20 years in jail. Belgian courts have jurisdiction over violations of the Geneva Convention, regardless of where the crimes were committed.
