Age: 93

innovative golf course architect who designed or remodeled more than 500 courses, including Augusta National, Oakland Hills and Hazeltine National; had a reputation for designing difficult holes and entire courses that frequently drew huge bunkers, creeks, and lakes into play; his courses exist in 45 states and 35 foreign countries and have hosted 79 national championships, including 21 U.S. Opens and 12 PGA Championships; studied at Cornell University where he fashioned his own program of studies to become a course architect during the late 20s; first significant work was his collaboration with Bobby Jones (no relation) to create Peachtree GC in Atlanta in 1948; before the 1954 U.S. Open hit a hole-in-one on the 165-yard, par-3, 4th hole at Baltusrol GC in Sprinfield, N.J. to prove to complaining pros and members that his redesign was fair; created putting green at the White House for Dwight Eisenhower and a hole with three different tees at Camp David, the president's weekend retreat; helped found the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1947; won first Donald Ross Award for outstanding contributions to the industry; first architect inducted into the Golf World Hall of Fame in 1987; his death came on the eve of the 100th U.S. Open; He died of a long illness that resulted from a stroke he suffered in 1999.
