Emory O. Cunningham 2000 Deaths

Emory O. Cunningham

78: publisher whose Southern Living magazine helped reinvent the image of the South. Frustrated that the region was stereotyped as an area mired in poverty and racism, Cunningham established his magazine to gracefully highlight the charm of the South. The magazine is known for its recipes and articles about traditional Southern crafts, music, and lifestyle. Time Inc. acquired Southern Living and its parent company, Southern Progressive Corp., in 1985 for $480 million. He died of pneumonia.
