hall-of-fame first baseman known as the "Black Lou Gehrig"; batted .340 and averaged 34 home runs during his 17-year career in the Negro Leagues; began his career with the Rocky Mount Black Swans in 1925; is best remembered for his years with the Homestead (Pa.) Grays from 1933-50, where batting after Josh Gibson, the Grays won nine straight league titles; elected to the hall of fame in 1972; from complications of a stroke he suffered in 1987
