defensive end with the Green Bay Packers who later became the first black to serve as speaker of the British Columbia parliament; captain of the Oregon football team, Barnes also shared the NCAA high jump title in 1954; drafted 18th overall by the Packers that fall and joined the team after a two-year stint in the U.S. Army; won Grey Cup in 1964 with British Columbia of the CFL; elected deputy speaker in 1991 and speaker two years later; of cancer
