Best Known as: Spanish poet opposed to Franco dictatorship

Spanish poet who wrote about issues of freedom and solidarity and member of the literary generation opposed to the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. As a member of the Spanish Royal Academy he was an advocate of preserving the Spanish language and won the Asturias Prize for Letters in 1985. Gonzalez eventually left Spain during the Franco Regime. He accepted a teaching position at the University of New Mexico in 1970, though he traveled back to Spain often.
