• Sept. 9, Urumqi, Xinjiang, China: 60 people were killed when a truck carrying explosives blew up on a major artery in the city's western suburbs.
• mid-September, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam: Rising flood waters from the Mekong River and its tributaries destroyed crops and livestock and left at least 235 people dead and 4.5 million homeless. Damages were estimated at $50 million in Cambodia and $24 million in Thailand.
• mid-September, Yemen and Saudi Arabia: An outbreak of Rift Valley fever, a mosquito-borne virus, resulted in scores of deaths.
• Sept. 26, nr. Paros, Greece: Greek ferry boat sank killing at least 66 people. Greece's worst ferry sinking in 35 years.
• Sept. 27, Shuicheng, Guizhou province, China: 118 miners died in a gas explosion at the state-owned Muchonggou coal mine.
