Tell us about your work---what do you do? I am a Landscape Designer . I work in a Landscape Architectural firm, which employs 5 Landscape Designers. What skills are needed? Other than a degree in Landscape Architecture , with the associated skills, verbal and written communication is a major skill that is needed. What was your major? Landscape Architecture How did you get started in your career? I was moving to Eugene, Oregon, with my fiancée, and I simply contacted every firm in the city and set up a time to meet with them, even if they were not hiring. What experience do you need in this job? The more experience the better. School prepares you for a career in Landscape Architecture, but the real world experience is worth a lot. Describe your "typical" workday: Client meetings, management of projects from the schematic design phase through construction supervision. No two days are alike! What is the hardest aspect of your job? Since no two days are alike, you don't know what to expect sometimes. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Seeing a design start out on tracing paper and finish as a built project. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? Learn as much as you can about all areas of the profession from ecological planning to construction techniques , etc. A well-rounded Landscape Architect is always in demand.
