Lalemant, Charles shärl lälmäN´ [key], 1587–1674, French Jesuit missionary in North America; brother of Jérôme Lalemant and uncle of Gabriel Lalemant. He arrived in Quebec in 1625 and acted as novice master and superior. His account, the earliest of the Jesuit Relations , is valuable. He was noted as a mystic. In 1639 he returned to France, where he acted as forwarding agent for the Canadian missions.
