<1> City (2020 pop. 4,858), seat of Navaho co., NE Ariz.;
founded c. 1881; inc. 1917. The town was established with the opening of the
railroad line. The railroad sold a million acres for development, and a
large influx of cattlemen came to the area resulting in several skirmishes
between them and Native Americans known as the Pleasant Valley Wars
(1882-92). This lead the area to be labeled as "too tough for women and
churches." President Theodore Roosevelt declared the nearby Petrified Forest
a National Monument in 1906. A large meteorite dropped thousands of
fragments around the town on July 19, 1912. <2> Town (2020
pop. 11,405), Norfolk co., E Mass.; settled 1710, set off from Randolph and inc. 1872. It has both
agriculture and light manufacturing.
