2 City (2020 pop. 99,757), Hamilton co., central Ind., on the White River; platted 1837 as Bethlehem; inc. and renamed 1874. A suburb of Indianapolis, Carmel has numerous corporate headquarters and a growing high-tech industry. The city is noted for the redevelopment that began in 1994 that revived its original downtown as the Arts and Design district, created the mixed-use City Center with a performing arts center, and constructed more than 80 traffic roundabouts to replace intersections and ease traffic congestion. Located in an area once inhabited by the Miami, the city initially was settled largely by Quakers.
