Store Bælt Bridge

Store Bælt Bridge stôˈrə bĕlt [key], link comprising two bridges and a tunnel, S Denmark, across the Store Bælt strait (see Store Bælt and Lille Bælt) between Sjælland and Fyn islands. The entire project was completed in 1998. The East Bridge (1998), a vehicular suspension bridge spanning the strait's east channel, between Sjælland and Sprogø (an island in the strait), is 4.2 mi (6.8 km) long with a central span of 5,328 ft (1,624 m). The East Tunnel, 5 mi (8 km) long, a twin-tube rail tunnel opened in 1997, similarly crosses the east channel. The West Bridge (1994), a 4.1-mi-long (6.6-km) box-girder bridge carrying both road and rail traffic, connects Sprogø and Fyn.
