Ravensburg

Ravensburg räˈvənsbo͝orkh [key], city (1994 pop. 47,099), Baden-Württemberg, S Germany. Its manufactures include machinery, paper, textiles, and wood products. Ravensburg was founded in the late 11th cent. under the protection of the Guelphs. The ruins of the Guelphic ancestral castle are nearby. It became a free imperial city in the 13th cent. and was a flourishing commercial center in the 15th and 16th cent. The city passed to Württemberg in 1810. It has retained much of the appearance of a medieval town.
