West Lafayette

West Lafayette, city (1990 pop. 25,907), Tippecanoe co., W Ind., a suburb of Lafayette, on the Wabash River; inc. 1924. A primarily residential city, it is the seat of Purdue Univ. There is farming (corn, wheat, soybeans, rye, oats, hogs, cattle) and manufacturing (machinery, electronic and consumer goods, and chemicals). Nearby is the Tippecanoe battlesite (see under Tippecanoe, river), where William Henry Harrison fought (1811) the Native American chief Tecumseh.
