As of the 2020 census, the state's population was: White alone, 68.6%; Black alone, 27%; Hispanic or Latino, 16%; American Indian and Alaska native alone, 0.5%; Asian alone, 1.8%; Two or More Races, 2%. Capital and largest city, Columbia. Statehood, May 23, 1788 (8th of the original 13 states to ratify the Constitution). Highest pt., Sassafras Mt., 3,560 ft (1,086 m); lowest pt., sea level.
