Herrin

Herrin, city (2020 pop. 12,352), Williamson co., S Ill.; settled 1818, inc. 1898. It is a trade center of an extensive coal-mining area. Herrin's varied manufactures include consumer and electrical goods and clothing. The city was the site of the Herrin Massacre; in 1922 during a countywide coal strike, clashes between unionized strikers and nonunion miners, who had been imported by the coal company, resulted in nearly 25 deaths.
