Gastonia găstō´nēə [key], city (1990 pop. 54,732), seat of Gaston co., SW N.C.; inc. 1877. An important textile mill center, Gastonia is a major producer of fine-combed cotton yarn. Chemicals, machinery, and electronic and automotive parts are also made. Gaston College is nearby, as is Kings Mountain National Military Park.
