Amecameca ämā˝kämā´kä [key], town (1990 pop. 25,374), Mexico state, S central Mexico, at the foot of the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes. The sanctuary of El Sacro Monte, the most venerated spot in Mexico after the shrine of Guadalupe Hidalgo , stands on a hill above Amecameca. The town's history dates back to 1200.
