Umeå ü´məō˝ [key], city (1990 pop. 60,310), capital of Västerbotten co., NE Sweden, on an inlet of the Gulf of Bothnia and at the mouth of the Umeälv River founded 1622. Manufactures of this industrial center include forest products, furniture, and machinery. Nearby Holmsund serves as its port. Umeå is the cultural center of Upper Norrland and has a university (1963).
